New Maserati Granturismo 2022: the all-electric GT preview Car News

Maserati has released the first official images of its iconic first electric car: the second-generation Granturismo Coupe.

The deliberately obstructing angles and heavy camouflage don’t betray much, but you can see that it retains the slender silhouette of its predecessor, and – notably – its name. It appears to resemble the long-awaited Alfieri concept, which premiered in 2016 but has yet to be seen in public.

The footage follows the release of a clip (below) last year in which Maserati previewed the sound of its first electric powertrain, which will power the 2022 Gran Turismo successor.

Technical details remain unconfirmed, but the replacement for the Granturismo is expected to offer faster acceleration than its petrol predecessor.

Maserati says it is working to make sure the powertrain has “a distinctive sound, already a unique attribute of all Maserati cars equipped with traditional combustion engines.” It is not yet clear how this will be achieved, but the firm is unlikely to artificially recreate the sound of its V6 or V8 engines.

Testing takes place at private facilities and on surrounding roads, meaning camouflaged prototypes will likely be seen in public soon, giving more clues as to what to expect from the new model.

The announcement follows confirmation in September that Maserati will significantly modernize its production facility in Turin and launch a wave of new models, and, more recently, unveilings of the Ghibli and Levante light hybrids.
