Peddis, who works for Nestlé, later said he shared the letter on social media “to turn pain and anger into words and to help me deal with the ugliness of the times we live in.”

He said his neighbors, a Romanian couple, had also received the same note and that the police were investigating to see if it had been sent to someone else in the area.

North Yorkshire Police have since confirmed that they are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Neighborhood police inspector for the force, Andy Godfrey, said: “Directing hatred at a person because of their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or gender is a crime that can have a devastating impact on individuals and entire neighborhoods, and it will not be tolerated in North Yorkshire.

“We understand that these letters in York have caused concern and we want to assure those affected, and the community at large, that we are taking this matter very seriously and are determined to find out who is responsible for sending them.”

Meanwhile, the York City Council has said it was “appalled” by the letter and its contents, and urged anyone else who sent it to send it.

Earl Darryl Smalley, York City Council Executive Member for Culture, Entertainment and Communities, said: “This is unacceptable in York or anywhere else, and we are horrified to see it.

“This is not in the spirit of York, who unconditionally appreciates and appreciates the contributions to the city of all who have chosen to make York their home.

“My heart goes out to those who receive such hateful mail and I am happy to see that they are being reported to the North Yorkshire Police. Anyone who receives letters like these, or experiences any other hate crime, should report it to the police, who can also offer support for.”
