COVID-19: “Olympic effort” underway as stadiums become ephemeral vaccination centers | UK News

London’s stadiums and football fields have been turned into vaccination centers with the aim of vaccinating as many people as possible against the coronavirus.

This is the first weekend since all adults became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, after the program opened to 18 to 20 year olds on Friday.

Sky correspondent Laura Bundock was in what was the Olympic Stadium in east London, home of West Ham United, where she said 15,000 vaccines were available.

“It was the home of the 2012 Games and there is certainly an Olympic effort going on here today,” she said, adding that “hundreds and hundreds” of people were lined up, the queue d ‘waiting winding all around the building.

“A teenager, Matthew, 18, told me his mother woke him up to tell him the news and forced him to make an appointment.

“Another told me he was due to start college in September and he really hopes it could mean going back to college a bit more normal, coming back to campus and continuing student life.”

Dr Jagan John, chairman of the North East London CCG, called the attendance “fantastic”, adding that 10,000 vaccinations had already been booked at the stadium for the day.

Dr John said pop-up vaccination centers were “crucial” to reaching as many people as possible with the vaccine.

He said: “The middle age [in the borough of Newham] is around 30, so … more we can do to make it practical and provide choices for our audience and our residents, so I think that’s the right way to move forward. “

Other London stadiums and football pitches used as vaccination centers this weekend include Chelsea’s home ground at Stamford Bridge, Tottenham Hotspur FC, Charlton Athletic FC, Selhurst Park and the Crystal Palace Athletics Center.
