The UK’s decision to leave the EU five years ago will allow the country to “seize” its true potential as it recovers from the pandemic, Boris Johnson said.
Marking half a decade to the day the UK voted to leave the bloc in a state-of-the-art referendum, the Prime Minister said Brexit would boost jobs and renewal across the UK United as the country rebuilds itself after COVID-19.
As of June 23, 2016, 51.9% of voters were in favor of leave the EU, with 48.1% wishing to stay.
In a statement marking the referendum anniversary On Wednesday, the Prime Minister said it was his “mission” to use the freedoms gained by Brexit to provide a more prosperous future for the British people.
“This government got Brexit done and we have already got our money, our laws, our borders and our waters back,” said Mr Johnson, who led the Vote Leave campaign.
“Now, as we recover from this pandemic, we will seize the true potential of our regained sovereignty to unite and level our whole UK.
“By controlling our regulations and subsidies, and with free ports spurring new investment, we will drive innovation, jobs and renewal in all regions of our country.
“The decision to leave the EU may now be part of our history, but our clear mission is to use the freedoms it brings to shape a better future for our people.”
But former pro-European Deputy Prime Minister Lord Heseltine warned that leaving the bloc left a “threatening” prospect for the UK.
European Movement President Lord Heseltine has said Brexit is “the complete opposite” of what the country needs as it recovers from the pandemic.
