Strawberry Super Moon: This year’s final night sky shows are approaching | UK News

The last super moon of 2021 is due to take place this week, with nearly a year to wait for the next.

British astronomers will be looking to spot the strawberry super moon on Thursday night – so named because it occurs during the strawberry harvest in North America.

A super moon is when a full moon takes place when the celestial body is at its closest point of orbit to Earth.

On Thursday, the moon will appear bigger and brighter in the night sky and will be only 228,003 miles from our home planet.

There have been two previous super moons in 2021 – the “rose” in April and the “flower” in May.

These are named because they occur during the flowering period of the fuschia flower and then the flowering of flowers in general respectively.

The next super moon is scheduled to take place on June 14, 2022.

He said: “The Strawberry Moon will be the last super moon of 2021, and it will peak on June 24 at 7:39 p.m. BST, although in the UK the moon will only rise about an hour after that time. “
