COVID-19: UK reports 14,876 new coronavirus cases and 11 other deaths | UK News

The UK has reported 14,876 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 other coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24-hour period, according to government data.

The numbers compare to 18,270 infections and 23 deaths announced yesterday, while there was 9,284 cases and six deaths recorded at this time last week.

This comes as a further 234,441 people received their first dose of a COVID vaccine yesterday, while another 199,505 received their second vaccine.

A total of 44,314,799 people in the UK have now received at least one injection, while 32,460,191 are fully vaccinated.

Over the weekend, hundreds of walk-in vaccination sites, including stadiums and shopping centers, opened in England as part of the “Grab a Jab” campaign with the aim of increasing the number of vaccines against a background of increasing coronavirus infections.

The NHS said half of all adults under 30 in England will have received a first dose of a vaccine by the end of the day.

More than 4.2 million people between the ages of 18 and 29 received a vaccine just three weeks after the vaccination program began for people in their 20s.

Earlier this month, concerns over the spread of the Delta variant led Prime Minister Boris Johnson to push back the June 21 target date to July 19 to remove all legal limits on social contact.

Professor Sir Peter Horby, chair of the Advisory Group on New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats (Nervtag), said he would not bring forward the date to ease restrictions, adding that it had been “very wise” to delay it for four weeks.
