School phone ban seen as a way to promote “quiet classes” | Politics News

The ban on cell phones will be seen as one of the measures to promote “quiet classrooms,” the education secretary said.

Gavin Williamson has said he wants to make the school day mobile-free because devices are “distracting” and potentially “damaging” when misused.

The government is seeking advice from teachers, parents and other staff on how to encourage good behavior in a six-week consultation.

It precedes an update to guidelines on behavior, discipline, suspensions and permanent exclusions later this year.

Respondents to the consultation will be asked how school policies and approaches have changed over the course of the COVID-19[female[feminine pandemic and what effective measures they intend to maintain.

“No parent wants to send their child to a school where bad behavior is rife,” said Williamson.

“Every school should be a safe place for young people to thrive and teachers to excel.

“Cell phones are not only entertaining, but when misused or abused they can have a detrimental effect on a student’s mental health and well-being.

“I want to end this, make the school day without a mobile.

“In order for us to help students overcome the challenges of the pandemic and improve opportunities for all young people, we need to ensure that they can benefit from quiet classrooms that help them thrive.”

But the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) accused the education secretary of “playing with backbenchers” with the decision.

“The education secretary seems to be obsessed with the subject of cell phones in schools. In fact, every school will already have a strong policy on the use of cell phones; it’s not some kind of digital free for all. Said Secretary General Geoff Barton.
