Statue of Princess Diana: “A symbol of her life and legacy” – what the monument means to William and Harry | UK News

Prince William and Prince Harry claim that a statue they unveiled of their mother is “a symbol of her life and legacy”.

The brief ceremony took place in the Garden below Kensington Palace on what would have been princess diana‘s 60th anniversary.

It was a small family event also attended by his siblings, Earl Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, as well as several others, including the artist behind the work, the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley.

The bronze statue was commissioned by William and Harry in 2017 to commemorate their mother and mark the 20th anniversary of her death in Paris.

They wanted the monument to recognize its positive impact in the UK and around the world, and help future generations understand the importance of its place in history.

The artwork, which is 1.25 times larger than life, aims to reflect her warmth, elegance and energy, in addition to her work and the effect she has had on many people, says Kensington Palace .

In the Sunken Garden, which was one of Diana’s favorite places, she is surrounded by three children who represent the “universality and generational impact” of her work.

Her hands are gently placed on the shoulders of two of the young people – a boy and a girl, the girl holding the princess’s hand.

The third child is partially obscured on the right side when the room is viewed from the front.

The statue shows Diana wearing an elegant open-necked blouse, wide belt, and pencil skirt.

Her short hair, dress style and portrait are based on the last period of her life – after her separation from the Prince of Wales.
