An 18-year-old man had to be rescued from a hole he dug on the beach after he collapsed on top of him.

Emergency services were called by the coast guard at Fistral Beach in Newquay on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

They found the man trapped in a hole he had dug in the sand after he came across him, Devon and Cornwall said the police.

The force said that “friends and beach goers all worked together to get the man to safety.”

He was allowed to return home after being examined by medics, the Newquay Fire Station said on Facebook.

“It could easily have resulted in crushing or suffocation,” they wrote.

“Please don’t dig huge holes in the sand, the sand is partially collapsing and the dry weight is about one ton per cubic meter.

“You wouldn’t dig a hole in the garden and let your children climb in; please don’t do it on a beach either. “
