F1 2021: Hamilton accepts two-year extension for Mercedes Car News

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton will remain with the Mercedes-AMG squad at least until the end of the 2023 season.

The Stevenage rider has signed a two-year extension to his contract with the team he’s piloted since 2013, ending speculation he could retire at the end of the season.

The deal means Hamilton will stay at Mercedes for the introduction of Formula 1’s major new rules package next season, which includes drastically redesigned cars and a series of cost-cutting measures. The extension is also notable as Hamilton recently closed a series of one-year contracts, not officially signing to run this season until February.

In addition to his seven tied world championships, Hamilton won a record 98 races and landed 100 pole positions during his F1 career, which started with McLaren in 2007. Six of those championships, as well as 77 wins and 74 poles were won. with Mercedes-AMG, making them the most successful driver-team pairing in F1 history.

Hamilton said he was “excited” to continue driving for Mercedes. He said: “We have accomplished so much together, but we still have a lot to accomplish, both on and off the track. I am incredibly proud and grateful for the way Mercedes has supported me in my drive to improve diversity and equality in our sport.

“They have held themselves accountable and made significant strides in creating a more diverse team and an inclusive environment.”

Hamilton added: “We are entering a new automotive era that will be exciting and exciting and I look forward to seeing what else we can accomplish together.”

Mercedes-AMG has yet to reveal who will partner Hamilton next season. Current driver Valtteri Bottas has been with the squad since 2017, but could be replaced by young Briton George Russell.
