Audi Sphere Trio Presents Autonomous SUV, Coupe and Sedan Car News

Audi has unveiled three new concept cars which bosses say showcase its vision for future autonomous vehicles.

The three concepts, named Sky Sphere, Grand Sphere and Urban Sphere, are expected to be presented during the next year. They were detailed in a video posted on Linkedin by Audi sales boss Henrik Wenders and design chief Marc Lichte.

In the video, Wenders called them “breathtaking concept cars that will reinvent mobility as we see it today”, adding that they were designed to deliver “unique first-class experiences”.

The Sky Sphere sketch shows a long, low-slung car with, which is unusual for an electric vehicle, an elongated hood. Wenders called it “a driver’s car and a self-driving car at the same time,” suggesting that it is a form of two-door sports coupe.

The Grand Sphere sketch shows a sleek grand tourer shape, which also features an elongated front but appears to have a larger body section. Lichte said it was “a great appearance, immersive and personal, a great classy experience for all the senses.”

The Urban Sphere has a more compact and boxy shape that has similarities to autonomous shuttles and echoes of Audi’s recent AI: ME compact SUV concept. Wenders describes it as “a private space in an urban, digital and social environment, engaging and perfectly centered around you”.

Audi has not given any details on when the three Sphere concepts will be presented or how closely they relate to future production models.

The company is currently expanding its E-tron range of electric vehicles and working on the advanced Artemis project, a software-based project that will use the Volkswagen Group’s upcoming SSP EV platform.
