Jaguar Land Rover tackles unreliability Car News

Jaguar Land Rover boss Thierry Bolloré is committed to solving the company’s reliability and quality issues once and for all.

Bolloré, who took on the role of CEO last fall, says a lot of progress has already been made in what he describes as the top priority of his “Reimagine” plan to turn around the business.

“This is the first pillar of Reimagine, our transformation plan,” said Bolloré. “Our results were unacceptable, but we know how to fix them. It’s not science, just hard work. The results for 2021 are already better, but we have more to do. “

One of Bolloré’s first acts just a month after joining Jaguar Land Rover was to appoint Nigel Blenkinsop to a new position on the board of directors, executive director of corporate quality and customer satisfaction, reporting directly in French.

“We now have a board member responsible for the entire value chain, which makes a big difference,” said Bolloré.

Progress has included a one-third drop in warranty costs compared to 2021 model year cars. Bolloré is also renewing the way JLR develops its models, introducing more technology and digital design on common systems which improve the quality of components and their integration at the start of the process.

“We are improving processes to achieve better quality from the design stage,” said Bolloré.

Jaguar and Land Rover models have long been plagued by quality and reliability issues around the world. In the most recent (2020) What Car? In reliability survey, Land Rover finished last out of 31 automakers, with a score of 78.2%, nearly 10% worse than the brand just above.

The poor performance in China notably led to protests outside the JLR headquarters in Shanghai in 2018.
