Volkswagen will roll out the first live software updates for the ID 3 and ID 4 starting this month, with the intention of offering quarterly updates for all of its EVs from now on.
The updates are a key step in Volkswagen’s renewed focus on software and will be critical for the company to charge money for additional services in the future.
The initial update will first be sent to the first ID 3s sold, whose owners are part of the First Movers Club. Due to software issues during the sedan’s launch, some cars were sold without all of the features originally intended. Updates will then follow for the other ID 3s and for the ID 4 SUV.
The initial update will upgrade the system from ID 3 to ID.Software 2.3 and include a range of new features. These will include upgrades to Dynamic Light Assist’s automatic high beam control feature, an ID light bar mounted on the dashboard so that it uses light signals to offer advice on more efficient driving. and improvements to the infotainment touchscreen interface.
Updates will automatically be sent to cars via the built-in internet, with owners having a choice of when they install the upgrade. The download will take place in the background, but drivers will not be able to use the car while it is installed. Owners must have a registered account with Volkswagen to receive updates.
In the future, Volkswagen will be able to update 35 control units on ID models.
Silke Bagschik, Volkswagen’s electric mobility sales manager, said Volkswagen has planned a long list of software upgrades, with the aim of balancing each update to ensure it is of a manageable size. .

While the first updates will be free, Bagschik has confirmed that future updates will offer paid upgrades.
