The A1 was partially closed in a southerly direction north of Newcastle after an accident early Friday morning.
The road is closed between the A197 and the junction with the A19.
Lane 1 is closed and disruptions are expected for about an hour and a half.
The accident was reported at around 1:18 a.m.
