Richard Okorogheye: Two Met Police Staff Received Reports Of Misconduct Following Teenager’s Disappearance | UK News

Two members of the Metropolitan Police have received misconduct notices regarding potential misconduct in the disappearance of teenager Richard Okorogheye, the police watchdog told Sky News.

The 19-year-old student, who suffered from sickle cell anemia and was protecting himself during the pandemic, disappeared after leaving his family home in Ladbroke Grove, in the west London, on the evening of March 22.

Her body was found in a lake in Epping Forest April 5. Police have yet to determine the cause of death.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is investigating how the disappearance of the Oxford University student Brookes was initially handled, following complaints by his mother, Evidence Joel.

At the time, Ms Joel told Sky News she believed she was not taken seriously by officers because of her race.

In a statement to Sky News, an IOPC spokesperson said: “We can confirm that we served notices of misconduct on two staff members of the Metropolitan Police Department as it appears they did may not have transmitted new relevant information about Richard Okorogheye to the team responsible for the assessment of missing persons.

“Service of a misconduct notice does not mean that disciplinary proceedings will follow.”

Ms Joel contacted police the day after her son went missing, but his disappearance was not officially registered until 8 a.m. on March 24.

She called the latest development “encouraging”.
