An innovative single-seater electric fan car was unveiled by British company McMurtry at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Dubbed Spéirling (and pronounced ‘spearling’ – Irish for thunderstorm), the car features an unusual ‘powered downforce’ electric fan and a low underbody skirt, allegedly capable of generating 500 kg of downforce. ‘stop.
The reasoning behind the technology is to allow a drastically reduced coefficient of drag while maintaining high levels of downforce. McMurtry argues that with minimal upper body aerodynamic aids, the Spéirling has a much lower coefficient of drag, something that “defines how much electrical power you need.”
Sporting a striking look and a 60 kWh battery that wraps around the cockpit, unlike the skateboard setup preferred by most manufacturers, the rear-drive Spéirling is said to be capable of 0-186 mph in under 9 , 0 seconds.
With a curb weight of less than a ton and minimal drag body, the car is able to run at track speeds for 30-60 minutes. This estimated range puts him on a par with current Formula E riders.
Additional technical details are scarce at this time as the 3.2m long prototype is currently a proof of concept development model. However, it is claimed that it should be capable of “GT3 performance levels”. Company CEO Tom Yates said the goal was to “create the best electric car possible.” We used the best motorsport safety to design the car, but ignored all the technical rules to design a car from scratch. “
Ultimately the goal is to build something that will be able to compete in a series of races. A road car could be a long-term possibility, although Yates said it was some free time: “We’re not close yet. We need to create a brand first, and the timing has to be right. First, we have to build credibility, then prove the car and then the technology. And then we can see which motorsport we could compete in. “
Five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell drives the car up the hill from Goodwood, before the team embark on a series of record-breaking attempts later this year and into 2022. It remains a secret what exactly those attempts will be. for the time being.
