Is this an omen? Weather at Wembley Expected to Be Similar to 1966 World Cup Final | UK News

England face Italy on Sunday in the same weather conditions as the 1966 squad that won the World Cup, the Met Office has announced.

Meteorologists predict temperatures of around 20C (68F) with a prospect of downpours that was the case for Wembley Stadium on the day of the final 55 years ago.

In what could be an omen for Gareth Southgateahead of the Euro 2020 final, the weather is similar despite the fact that average temperatures have risen significantly over the past half century due to climate change.

Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said: “I can tell you that on July 30, 1966, the weather was very similar to what is forecast for Sunday.

“It got up to around 20 ° C and there was a few showers around.”

Mr Dewhurst said it followed a weekend of patchy rain for much of the country.

Ahead of the Euro 2020 showdown on Sunday evening, a yellow weather alert is in place and rain is expected in the Southeast on Friday evening before lighter showers on the following days.

There will be a north-south divide on Saturday, according to Mr Dewhurst, with warmer temperatures in Scotland and northern England than in the Midlands and further south.

But the North could see thunderstorms, Mr Dewhurst adding: “It will be a mixed weekend for the vast majority of us.

“There is going to be a north-south split on Saturday – the north will experience sunny spells and heavy downpours that could contain thunderstorms, with high temperatures of 22C (71.6F).

“The south will experience cloudy weather with patchy rains and maximum temperatures of 20 ° C.”

He also warned football fans watching the game at Wembley and Trafalgar Square to be prepared for a risk of rain showers.

“We have got off to a good start in much of the UK but we will see outbreaks of rain developing in Wales and the south west of England on Sunday morning,” he said.
