Gareth Southgate’s side were inundated with messages of support ahead of Sunday’s final.

The Queen presented the 1966 World Cup to the England squad, without it being known that this will be the last time the team reach a final in a major tournament in 55 years.

“55 years ago I had the chance to present the World Cup to Bobby Moore and saw what it meant for the players, management and support staff to reach and win the final of a great international football tournament, “wrote the monarch.

“I want to extend my congratulations to you and my family for reaching the final of the European Championships, and to send you my best wishes for tomorrow with the hope that history will record not only your success but also the spirit, dedication and pride with which you conducted yourself. “
