Between 1,000 and 2,000 COVID-19 patients per day could be admitted to hospital in England at the height of the third wave and there could be 100 to 200 deaths per day, according to government scientists.
The number of daily infections in this latest wave is not expected to peak until mid-August, according to recently published articles by the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE).
Experts are urging the public to “take it easy” after most restrictions are lifted on July 19, in order to curb infections and reduce the number of people who will die from COVID-19.
They recommend that not all workers return to the office from mid-July, continue to wear masks in crowded spaces, and stay home when infected or contacted by the NHS or NHS Test app and Trace.
Scientists say if people suddenly resume normal behavior before the pandemic, there will be a big wave of infection and more hospitalizations.
Instead, if the behavior returns to normal over several months, the impact will be smaller.
It comes as the government has announced that England will move to the fourth and final step on the roadmap to lift the majority of lockdown restrictions within a week.
All COVID limits on gatherings will be removed on July 19, masks will no longer be legally required, social distancing measures will be removed and the order to work from home will be lifted.
But Boris Johnson urged the nation to proceed with caution, saying the government recommends people always wear face coverings in crowded and confined spaces such as public transport.
And the prime minister also told a press conference that he did not expect the whole country to return to his office next Monday.
He warned the pandemic “is not over,” adding the removal of restrictions “should not be taken as a sign to have a great jubilee”.
