The new Ford Mustang Mach-E set a Guinness World Record for electric car efficiency, averaging 6.54 miles per kWh on an 840 mile route between John o ‘Groats and Land’s End.
The performance electric SUV was driven by BBC transport correspondent Paul Clifton and Fergal McGrath and Kevin Brooker, who together already hold fuel and diesel efficiency records.
Left on July 3 and driving at night to avoid traffic jams, the trio completed the journey in 27 hours at an average speed of around 50 km / h. This latest achievement follows the exploits of the Renault Zoe, which recently achieved 425 miles of range (180 miles above its official WLTP figure) in a record attempt staged by Mission Motorsport at the Thruxton circuit.
The Mustang Mach-E used here was the rear-wheel-drive Extended Range version with the 88 kWh battery. By driving well within the car’s means, its effective range was increased to over 500 miles, significantly more than the 379 miles it covered in the WLTP test.
