Business leaders have stepped up their calls for an immediate overhaul of the self-isolation rules for people with double shots before the restrictions across England are lifted definitively tomorrow.

The Confederation of British Industry has asked those who have received two doses of a COVID vaccine should not have to self-isolate for 10 days if it comes in contact with an infected person.

And they want those who haven’t had a double bite to be able to take daily lateral flow tests instead of self-isolating.

Many industries are warning of disruption if a continued rise in COVID cases in England results in a significant worsening of what has been dubbed the ‘pingemia’ of people needing to self-isolate.

Supermarkets have warned of food supply issues and possible shorter opening hours if growing numbers of workers are to quarantine, while transportation networks are already experiencing problems due to a lack of staff.

The latest figures up to July 7 show 530,126 people in one week were alerted by the NHS COVID app to self-isolate after coming into contact with someone who tested positive.

The issue of self-isolation of people with double injections has been in the spotlight after Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak made a dramatic U-turn after initially saying they would avoid quarantine after Health Secretary Sajid Javid tested positive.

The pair quickly abandoned their plans to use a daily test pilot program following an outcry.

And, before England took the final step on their roadmap to lifting lockdown restrictions on Monday, Mr Johnson urged people to continue to follow current self-isolation rules.

“We are going to the fourth stage tomorrow, we are making a big opening,” he said.
