“People desperately wanted to have fun again”: Latitude Festival returns and 40,000 fans are ready | Ents & Arts News

Thousands of people arrived at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk, excited to be at one of the first major events since the easing of coronavirus restrictions in England.

The four-day music event, which takes place in the Henham Park area, is part of the Government’s Events Research Program.

This meant that fans had to show that they had been vaccinated twice or had tested negative for the virus.

Social distancing rules were lifted in England on Monday, but as Latitude continues, some other festivals – such as Glastonbury and Womad – have been canceled this year.

Latitude founder Melvin Benn said: “All the plans were in place, all the bands were in place, the people were just, you know, desperate to come, desperate to play, desperate to work and really be in a field. having fun again, and that’s what we do. “

“There was a doubt after June 21 and you know the cancellation of what was freedom day, postponing it to July 19 really put me under pressure, because you know we just open two days later, three days later.

“But what I managed to do was persuade the government to allow us to participate in the event research program, and that gave me confidence that it would happen.

“And that’s why we’re here effectively, the government is testing the NHS app, you know, with a view to how the NHS app will work, in the long run, because you know the full capacity shows affectively.”

Alice Kelly, 21, is among those eagerly awaiting something that would not have been allowed around this time last year due to restrictions on coronaviruses.

She said: “I kind of think it’s the safest I’ve felt because I know everyone has a negative test and stuff and even submitting my own negative test – it’s like almost comfort, definitely. “
