The University of Sussex has announced its intention to become one of the most sustainable universities in the world, with a goal of achieving net zero emissions within 15 years.
The “Sustainable Sussex” strategy presents proposals for overhauling its transport, heating and supply chains over the next decade to reduce emissions and be more environmentally friendly.
Among the plans are targets to reduce the waste produced per student by ten percent by 2025, creating the UK’s most biodiverse campus by setting aside up to half the site for nature and encouraging more staff and students to volunteer in the community.
Outgoing Vice Chancellor Professor Adam Tickell said: “Universities exist to answer the big questions – and there is no bigger question than how to build a sustainable planet.
“This is the biggest challenge facing humanity and this strategy puts sustainability at the heart of everything we do. ”
The university was named one of the top 50 in the world for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for research, teaching, management and outreach in the Times Higher Education World Impact Rankings earlier this year .
The strategy also includes goals to build an additional solar farm on campus, ensure more food comes from local producers, and consider whether to end or reduce the sale of beef and lamb meals. by 2023 – if supported by students and staff.
“We need to rebuild greener from the Covid pandemic and so now is the time for the university to really renew our already strong sustainability ethic,” added Professor Tickell.
