Electric scooters go red light in Bath, man says Bath City News

A resident reported seeing electric scooters passing through red lights in Bath, calling them a “threat”.

Bill Green, a local resident, wrote in the Bath Chronicle newspaper that it was “only a matter of time” before a pedestrian was struck.

He went on to say that some actions by drivers on electric scooters are becoming “anti-social”.

Currently the city has Voi electric scooters for a route in Bristol and Bath.

Electric scooters are seen as a key way to reduce emissions by getting people out of their cars, especially for short trips and commuting, and the government recently announced that it wanted to see them gradually legalized in nationwide.

At the moment, electric scooters are not legal on the road, with police in Avon and Somerset having to seize illegal blacks.

Mr. Green’s full letter reads: “There is definitely a threat from the new electric scooters. I have seen several young drivers go through red lights, one when I was crossing.

“It will only be a matter of time before a pedestrian is struck.

“Some young runners go fast in public parks and on sidewalks to scare others. They get a distorted thrill or buzz.

“They need to be stopped. This is anti-social behavior. We should ban all electric scooters from parks and public places.

“There are also parking problems.

“Too many people end up blocking sidewalks. It is not fair.

“And some young male runners seem to think speed on sidewalks or roads is okay, and they don’t need to protect their heads.

“The irresponsible few, the minority, will take advantage and make things bad for the majority.

“We must act now to stop the threat of electric scooters. It can mean local regulations and local action.”

Voi has launched a safety campaign to encourage greater safety.

The city’s leading electric scooter operator has launched a “Ride Safe, Park Smart” campaign to encourage users to ride safely in the city using a helmet as well as driving safely and parking smart.
