A new cafe and store could arrive in a vacant industrial area next to a train station, according to new plans.

The new retailer would be located behind Castle Cary station and near the A371, on a factory site that was once used for processing dairy products.

The old milk and cheese factory was erected in 1910 to use rail links to transport dairy products between the South West and London.

Emily Estate, owner of the tourist attraction and The Newt hotel in nearby Somerset, has now applied for a development to convert the area into a collaborative workspace, a cheese factory, a factory for milk processing and a café open to members. public.

Emily Estate bought the site in 2018, before which it had been used for a variety of “short-term uses” including open car storage, an antique store and a wine bar.

The main building is described as being in a state which “could benefit from investment and modernization”, while the whole site “presents an aspect of vacancy and inactivity of poor quality” for newcomers or departures. the train station.

The design statement reads: “The owner’s vision is for the dairy site to once again be economically productive and attractive to those passing through the station.

“The cheese will again be made in the building from locally sourced milk, as part of The Newt’s larger food and beverage operation.

“The introduction of an artisanal or small-scale milk processing plant will support and celebrate high quality local products and products. “

The building and new landscaped gardens would be geared towards locals and visitors alike, with flexible coworking office space for individuals or small businesses, and a cafe serving food and drink.

The site would also be integrated into the tourism offering of The Newt in Somerset, as an “initial arrivals center” for customers traveling from the station.

The request indicates that arrangements are underway with Great Western Rail to offer visitors a package tour to The Newt by train, with arriving and departing guests passing through this offered site by minibus.

The plans include the demolition of the extensions that were added to the original building as well as the construction of a new side extension and the creation of a parking lot with landscaped garden.
