Banwell fire investigation opened as cause of fire remains unclear Bath City News

Authorities are investigating the cause of a massive fire that caused thick black smoke on the M5.

A pile of tires and several vehicles burned as a fire gripped three industrial units in Banwell, just east of Weston-super-Mare.

Residents nearby were evacuated from their homes yesterday afternoon (Friday August 27) as the flames set in, with police setting up a 100m exclusion zone for security reasons.

They were allowed to return late last night after fire crews worked for hours to alleviate the scene along Whitley Road.

No one was injured but an investigation was launched to determine the cause.

Avon Fire and Rescue Services said the call arrived at 3.32pm and upon arrival they found three single-story industrial units “well lit”.

Seven cars, containers, welding units, a forklift and a large quantity of tires were also set on fire.

The fire department deployed eight fire apparatuses, a revolving ladder, a command unit, a welfare unit, the drone team, a high-flow pump and a pipe laying to extinguish the flames.

In a statement released last night, a spokesperson added: “No one was injured in the blaze, and residents evacuated at the height of the incident have now been returned to their homes.

“At 10:21 p.m., two pumps remained in place using a high-pressure hose reel and a thermal camera damping the area.

“The cause of the fire will be determined following an investigation into the fire.”
