Sir Jeffrey said: “It cannot reasonably be expected that trade unionists will work normally on a north / south basis when our relations with the rest of the UK are affected on a daily basis by this protocol.

“It is simply the reality of the political situation we are facing.

“I don’t want to see a political crisis in Northern Ireland, I don’t want to see political institutions hurt, I want to see a Northern Ireland where we move towards a more united community, but protocol is hurting our ability to build this united community.

He added: “We must remove the border which has developed between Northern Ireland and Britain in trade terms, we must recognize that for trade unionists who transcend the Act of Union itself, who is the cornerstone of our relationship with the rest of the UK.
