Heineken’s pub arm, Star, is set to create 500 jobs with a £ 38 million investment program Yorkshire News

The investment will benefit 700 pubs of the Star Pubs & Bars chain

The Dutch beer giant said the cash injection will benefit some 700 pubs at its Star Pubs & Bars operation by the end of 2021.

It comes as the group seeks to accelerate the recovery of its headquarters after being hit hard by forced closures earlier in the year and for much of 2020 due to the pandemic.

The firm said nearly 80 pubs will receive “major makeovers” costing up to £ 400,000 each as part of the program.

Investment is particularly targeting the creation of premium sites in suburban and main street locations within a 10-minute walk of residential areas, as people spend more time at home due to changes in work habits.

Lawson Mountstevens, Star Managing Director, said: “Many people have rediscovered the joy of their neighborhood pub between closings and closings over the last year and are choosing to stay local.

“This investment responds to that demand, providing communities with quality pubs on their doorstep.

“The pandemic has demonstrated the resilience of the great British pub and especially the leased and rented model.

“We are committed to leveraging that support with renovations, so pubs across the country prosper in the long term.”

Mountstevens added that the company has spent £ 62 million on rent cuts to keep its pubs afloat during closing periods.

Star Pubs & Bars’ investment in a remodel of the White Swan in Otley with licensee Jason Smith has improved the pub and made it more sustainable in the long term.

Mr. Smith said: “Star and I took the time to find out what clients wanted prior to the remodel, as The White Swan is a friendly and well loved local community and people were concerned about the change. They wanted to see improvements. , but not for the pub. to be fully revised.

“The feedback since we reopened has been brilliant. Newcomers love it and The Otley Pub Club said it had regenerated an old pub.”
