A gas station charging nearly double the average price of fuel has sold as shortages continue to wreak havoc on motorists.
The Cloisters Gulf service station on Sloane Avenue, Chelsea sells fuel for £ 2.68 a liter.
Photos posted on social media showed a customer being charged £ 164.97 for just over 61 liters of fuel. Kajem Nava, a parking official at the station, told the Daily Mirror that fuel was depleted on Friday and the company expected the fuel to be replenished on Monday.
According to the RAC Foundation, the average price of unleaded petrol in the UK as of September 30 was £ 1.36 and £ 1.48 for super unleaded.
Brian Madderson, president of the Petrol Retailers Association, said global oil prices mean motorists should expect higher prices at the pump, even as current shortages ease.
“Expect an increase of 1, 2 or even 3 pence per liter at the pump,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today. “It’s not profit. These are real wholesale price increases caused by global factors.
Meanwhile, military drivers will be deployed to deliver fuel to the forecourt from Monday in a bid to deal with the crisis. Nearly 200 military personnel, including 100 drivers, have been trained at transport sites and will begin deliveries to help alleviate the situation at gas stations.
Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the fuel situation is “stabilizing” in most parts of the country and the military is being deployed as a “precaution”.
The government also announced that a temporary visa program for nearly 5,000 foreign food transport drivers, which was due to expire on December 24, will be extended until the end of February.
Mr Madderson said shortaghe remains a “really big deal” in London and the south-east of England “and maybe parts of eastern England”.
“If anything, it got worse,” he said.
