BBC QT: West slammed for ‘selling Ukraine down the river’ for nukes | United Kingdom | News UK News

BBC Question Time was dominated by talk of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. During yesterday’s episode, panelists and audience members spoke out against the use of nuclear weapons.

SNP deputy leader at Westminster, Kirsten Oswald, even argued with comedian Konstantin Kisin about the effectiveness of nuclear weapons as a deterrent.

But after Peter Kyle, Labour’s Shadow secretary for Northern Ireland, said Ukraine had “given up” its nuclear weapons, a member of the public came out to correct the record.

Mr Kyle said: ‘There is another point here, Ukraine is one of the very few countries in the world that has given up its nuclear weapons.

After some light heckling from the audience, the Hove MP added: ‘Well had them withdrawn, lost his nuclear deterrent himself and I’m afraid the lesson is a brutal one.’

In response, a member of the public in Norwich said: “Ukraine gave up its nuclear deterrent on a whim because it signed the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 at the behest of the West, is not it not?”

“We promised, Britain, America, to protect them, to protect their borders, to protect their sovereignty, if they gave up their nuclear weapons.”

BBC host Fiona Bruce chimed in to say: ‘And, of course, Russia has also promised.

The viewer then continued, “They gave it all up, and what did we do?

“We sold them on the river.”

“Well, yes, he would.

“And he wants us to know that, of course.

“It’s not that we should be intimidated and scared…

“We have to prepare for these eventualities and determine what we are going to do to avoid them.”
