Demonstration against the conflict in Ukraine planned for Bath this weekend Bath City News

A demonstration against the war in Ukraine will take place in Bath tomorrow (Saturday March 5). The organizers stressed that it would be a “peaceful” event and that “no aggression or discrimination against the Russian people will be tolerated”.

The “Bath Stands with Ukraine” demonstration will take place in front of the abbey at 10 a.m. and will last approximately two hours. MP for Bath Wera Hobhouse will be a guest speaker at the event.

Dr Stephen Hall, lecturer in Russian politics at the University of Bath, will also take the microphone, alongside Ivan Golobow, lecturer in Russian studies at the same institution. Local Ukrainian and Russian students will also have the opportunity to speak.

The protest aims to show support for Ukraine and condemn Putin’s actions. However, speakers will also educate Bath audiences about the background and context of the war, as well as what they can do to help.

It will be a celebration of Ukrainian culture, with traditional music and sweets, and generally no hostility towards Russians will be tolerated. The event will end around 12:30 p.m.

News broke today that Europe’s biggest nuclear power station has been bombed by Russian forces as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Putin of ‘nuclear terror’. A fire broke out during the night of the night at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, which, according to the neighboring mayor Dmytro Orlov, was caused by “the continuous enemy shelling of [the plant’s] buildings and units”.

As the crisis in Ukraine reaches its ninth day, Zelensky reportedly asked Putin for one-on-one talks, saying it was the only way to end the war. He also called on the West to “give me planes” to fight the invasion. Learn more here.
