‘Tis the season for a drink – and if you’re looking to go beyond traditional espresso martinis and hot toddies, why not take inspiration from the Double Red Duke hotel’s book bar?

Located in the heart of the Cotswolds and dating back to the 16th century, the bar is exactly what you think of when imagining a great British Christmas evening. Garlanded with ivy and a huge pine tree in the garden, it opens up to an inviting space, with four fires to warm up on a cold winter day.

“We have a kitchen where you can sit at the counter on the marble top and watch the chefs cook over the wood fire, it’s epic but quite modest,” says Josh Page, the beverage manager behind the cocktail menu at the Double Red Duke.

‘We call ourselves a pub and we mean we pull pints all day, but if you stopped for something a little more special on the way I think you’d be impressed. It’s a welcoming and unpretentious atmosphere, but our offer is serious.

Page’s background is in cocktails and he cut his teeth working in Oxford before moving to the countryside, although he didn’t originally foresee he’d be able to show off his creative flair as much as he did. he did it in a pub environment. “Initially, the manager said he didn’t want it to become a pub that made too many cocktails,” he laughs.

“I was ok with that, I was happy to focus on beer and wine – I like all that too – but I secretly thought, ‘If you do it right, you can make cocktails. and that’s what we did.
