Now, a projection show on its Italian-style fireplace shares stories and hopes for its present and future. The Mills are Alive in Manningham is a project to explore the experiences of those who have called this part of Bradford home.
Using music, audio, archival footage and photography, he sheds light on the stories and celebrates the rich cultures of his community, from the experiences of mill workers to the dreams of local school children in the 20-minute show.
Rosie Freeman, director of The Brick Box CIC, said the response had been fantastic: “People have said they have learned about the fascinating history of Lister Mills and also feel more connected and proud of where they live. With this project we have found personal and unique stories and a true passion for heritage in the community.
“Creating and sharing experiences like this is something deep and powerful.”

The projection show, which took place every night from Thursday, February 28 to Friday, March 5, tells of those who have immigrated and grew up in Manningham since the industrial revolution.
It touches on political and social movements, as well as Manningham’s past as the “beating heart” of the textile industries, up to the birth of the Bradford Festival and Bradford Mela Festival.
Bradford is one of eight locations shortlisted to be the next UK City of Culture 2025, and Bradford 2025 is a key partner in the project, which is funded by Arts Council England, Bradford Council, Historic England and Urban Splash.
