Vietnamese automaker Vinfast and Italian designer Pininfarina detailed designs for two all-electric SUVs at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, ahead of reservations for models that will open in April this year.
Both cars have been confirmed for a European launch – first in Germany, France and the Netherlands – in the second half of 2022, priced at the equivalent of around £36,000, but a UK launch with driving at right does not seem to be in the company’s immediate plans.
The VF 8 and VF 9 feature what Vinfast described as “modern design language to optimize aerodynamics”, which reduces power consumption.
Vinfast says the VF 8 and VF 9 are inspired by sports cars and says working with Pininfarina will help its cars become “more efficient, attractive and accessible” for all customers.
Inside, the models feature a 15.6-inch touchscreen. The physical buttons are minimal, but there’s a full-color heads-up display that can be used to keep track of important car information.
The company plans to use environmentally friendly materials in the production version of both cars. The seats will feature eco-leather upholstery and Vinfast also says the model’s batteries will be recycled to reduce water waste and chemical emissions.
Both cars were first publicly shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show last year. Vinfast says the VF 8 has a maximum range of 313 miles and up to 402 hp and 457 lb ft.
The six- or seven-seat VF 9 is expected to receive the same twin-engine configuration. The firm says it is aiming for a five-star Euro NCAP safety score for both cars.
“The finesse and creativity of Pininfarina’s design created the appeal of Vinfast electric vehicles, helping us realize our efforts,” said Emmanuel Bret, Deputy General Manager of Vinfast. “I believe Vinfast will move quickly towards the goal of smarter and more sustainable mobility solutions for everyone.”
