Climate activists deflate car tires in Brighton in protest Brighton News

CLIMATE activists have deflated the tires of “gas guzzling luxury cars” parked on city streets as part of a drive to raise awareness of carbon emissions.

Activists in Brighton have placed leaflets on windscreens apologizing for targeting SUVs.

Tire Extinguishers, believed to be a splinter group from Extinction Rebellion, said they wanted to “make it impossible to own an SUV in urban areas of the UK”.

A leaflet left on the vehicles reads: “You will be angry. But don’t take it personally. It’s not you, it’s your car.

“We did this because driving around urban areas in your massive vehicle has huge consequences for others.

“That’s why we took this step. You will have no trouble getting around without your energy guzzler, with walking, cycling and public transport.

Sports utility vehicles in parts of London, including Chelsea, Chiswick, Notting Hill and Belgravia, have also been targeted.

Other parts of the country that have reportedly been targeted are Bristol, Cambridge, Sheffield, Liverpool and Edinburgh.

Overnight, Tire Extinguishers claims to have deflated the tires of hundreds of cars in its first action as a protest group.

A spokesperson for the group said members wanted to see bans on SUVs in urban areas, pollution taxes to tax SUVs and investment in public transport.

He added that until politicians make these demands a reality, the tire extinguisher action will continue.

Marion Walker, member of The Tire Extinguishers, said: “Governments and politicians have failed to protect us from these huge useless vehicles. SUVs are a climate disaster, they pollute the air and are dangerous for other road users.

“Everybody hates them, except the people who drive them.”

Tire Extinguishers said it has posted instructions on how to deflate tires on its website and encourages people to participate.

Sussex Police have been approached for comment.

SUVs are generally defined by their large size and off-road characteristics such as high ground clearance and four-wheel drive.

A similar action was taken by the group Tyred of SUVs, which targeted vehicles in Glasgow.
