The 3008 is among the smaller and less expensive cars that adopt the architecture of Peugeot’s large car models. Known as “EMP2”, this platform also serves under the Peugeot 5008 and Peugeot 508 sedans, as well as larger models from Citro├źn, Vauxhall and DS Automobiles. Using the platform allows Peugeot to offer fully independent suspension and all-wheel drive (via an electric rear axle) in top-end versions of the car; but that also rules out any pure electric derivatives (step down one market segment and you can opt for an all-electric Peugeot e-2008 crossover sedan, of course).

Turbocharged combustion engines are mounted transversely under the hood of the car and drive the front axle. They vary in size from 1.2 liters and three cylinders up to 1.6 liters and four cylinders; they take both petrol and diesel options; and they offer between 128 and 178 hp for those who want a conventionally powered option.

The majority of 3008s combine a strut-style front suspension with a space-saving torsion beam arrangement in the rear, but, in part because they can incorporate all-wheel drive into the equation, the two plug-in hybrid derivatives swap that beam axle for a more sophisticated multi-link setup. In the Hybrid 225 (as tested), Peugeot’s 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine is combined with an electric drive motor ahead of the car’s eight-speed automatic gearbox, and up to 222 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque can make their way to the front wheels. . In the more expensive Hybrid4 300, an additional electric motor is used to directly drive the rear axle, and the peak power of the “total system” amounts to 296 hp. Both hybrid versions use the same lithium-ion battery, which has a gross capacity of 13.2 kWh (10.4 kWh net/usable) and is carried under the rear seats of the car.

However, Peugeot claims significantly higher performance for the Hybrid4: 6.1 seconds from 0-62mph plays 8.9-, with the Hybrid 225 weighing just 80kg, the lightest of the pair. Our midrange test car weighed 1754kg on the test scale, which is about what it should have weighed considering a full tank of fuel and some equipment in option. But simpler, non-electrified versions of the car would weigh only 1320 kg.

Peugeot’s mid-life update for the 3008 improved the car’s exterior styling in places, notably around the grille and headlights where the new car gets a frameless grille and a distinctive striped look. UK buyers are offered a five-tier range of derivatives, and if you opt for one of the top two you can have an optional ‘Black Pack’ styling theme which adds gloss black alloy wheels and matching body trim, and lots of dark smoked chrome. ‘ body decorations.
