Novice pilots: Teams must now give a rookie (ie a driver who has not started more than two Grands Prix) a first practice outing at least twice during the season.
Wheels and tires: The diameter has been increased from 13 inches to 18 inches and the tire covers can now only heat the tires to 70 degrees C (previously it was 100 in the front and 80 in the rear).
It’s time for new tires
In a world of huge alloys, it always seemed odd that F1 would persist with 13-inch wheels. That changes in 2022 as it features fashionable 18-inch wheels with lower profile tire sidewalls. And this is not the only change, since the drivers who reach the third and final qualifying session will no longer have to start the race with their Q2 tire. As a result, you should see a lot more teams using the softer compound in Q2 in hopes of qualifying for pole position.
However, some things have not changed: Pirelli remains the sole tire supplier and there will still be five slick compounds available (C1 to C5; hard to soft). As before, teams will have a choice of three of five on any weekend, plus rains and intermediates. Each driver receives 13 sets of slicks per weekend.
Tires are much taller now, so some peaks will now be blind, and tire warmers are set to a lower temperature (this will further reduce year on year until electric blankets are phased out from 2024 ). Thus, the driver who manages the fastest to bring his rubber up to working temperature will win a significant bonus.
