False start for Brighton beach promenade Brighton News

A SEAFRONT promenade is nearing completion after a mysterious false opening this weekend.

Visitors to Brighton beach used the new promenade on Sunday, although they were surprised to find only part of it had been built.

Signs warning people of work in progress have been removed, suggesting the walkway was open – although it wasn’t.

Brighton and Hove City Council were unable to explain why the signs had disappeared.

“The work signage was not removed by the town hall this weekend,” said a spokesperson.

“As the work is ongoing, our contractors have now reinstated it.

“Work on several crossing points on the Volk railway is almost complete.”

The 800m promenade will cover the beach area from the bottom of Dukes Mound to Black Rock Electric Station and “provide easy access for all beachgoers”.

The opening is scheduled for Thursday, April 7.

It is part of the council’s Black Rock Rejuvenation Project, which is to “significantly improve the environment and infrastructure of the eastern seafront”.
