Former Brexit Party MEP Rupert Lowe said: “Johnson should immediately lift the ban on fracking.

“It will have to happen sooner or later, so go on now.”

But, according to Professor Maslin, restarting fracking is not as straightforward as it first appears. He explained that it would require a lot of time and manpower.

Greg Hands, an energy minister, suggested that shale gas “could be part of our future energy mix, but we need to be guided by science and have the support of local communities”.

As such, “shale gas is not the solution to short-term problems.”

New methods of extracting shale gas, said to be more environmentally friendly than hydraulic fracturing, have been mooted as possible alternatives.
