Toyota will publicly showcase the GR Corolla, its new Honda Civic Type R and Volkswagen Golf R rival, at the New York International Auto Show later this month.
A new entry into the dreaded hatchback sedan segment, the highly anticipated GR Corolla will be shown at the show from April 15-24, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.
The new version of the Toyota Corolla joins a rapidly expanding Toyota lineup developed by the Gazoo Racing performance division, alongside the Toyota GR Yaris, Toyota GR Supra and Toyota GR 86 – but unlike those cars, it is not intended for sale in Europe.
The latest entry in the ranks uses a 1.6-litre single-scroll turbocharged three-cylinder engine familiar from the acclaimed GR Yaris, but with power boosted significantly to 300hp and torque slightly increased to 273 lb-ft.
The rides are achieved thanks to a triple outlet exhaust, which reduces back pressure and improves exhaust flow, a new “multi-oil jet piston” cooling system, larger exhaust valves and a partially machined intake port.
Power is sent to both axles via a six-speed manual gearbox, as in the GR Yaris, with an Intelligent Manual Transmission (IMT) function, which essentially serves as a rev-matching function for smoother downshifts.
The top-of-the-line Circuit Edition car is also equipped with a pair of Torsen differentials for improved grip and cornering response.
Bespoke 18-inch sport wheels are wrapped in sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires and backed by vented, slotted performance brake rotors gripped by four-piston aluminum calipers.
Toyota has yet to confirm performance figures, but expect a 0-62 mph time of 5.0 seconds.
While the GR Corolla’s silhouette is more closely related to the car on which it is based than with the GR Yaris and the regular Yaris, Toyota claims that “the highly rigid body was specifically built” for the new car.
