Hastings United FC slam vandals for targeting ground with paint Brighton News

Football club OFFICIALS have slammed vandals for targeting their pitch ahead of their promotion celebrations.

Paint was thrown over the main entrance and welcome sign overnight at Hastings United FC’s home at Continental Pilot Field.

The U have earned promotion from the Isthmian League Southeast and will lift the trophy after their game against VCD Athletic Football Club today.

A spokesman said the club were disappointed the vandals targeted the ground ahead of today’s celebrations.

He said, “It’s shameful. Before lifting the trophy today for the first time in 20 years, our staff are looking to this act of vandalism.

“Sometimes the human race has really let you down, but today we celebrate.”

Billy Wood, the club’s chairman and chief executive, said the team and the fans would not let vandalism spoil their celebrations.

He said: “Nothing dims our celebrations. It’s time to clean up and later we jump.

Football clubs across the country shared messages of solidarity with Hastings United following the vandalism.

Crowborough Athletic FC said: “Sometimes there are no words to describe some people who do things like this.

“What must be going through their minds for this to be such a good idea to do.”

A Herne Bay FC spokesman said: “Absolutely shameful that this is happening to clubs.

“As we have said before, some issues are more important than football. We are fully behind you Hastings United Football Club.

Sportswriter Josh Bunting described the vandalism as “absolutely ridiculous”.

He said, “Who would even think of doing that?” People have to seriously look at themselves and wonder why.

The club reported the vandalism to Sussex Police, and the Argus approached the force for comment.

Hastings United clinched the league title after a 1-1 draw at Faversham on Saturday April 9.

The team will play in the Isthmian Premier next season.

The club are hoping to break their match attendance record today and are urging people from across Hastings to join in the celebrations.
