Reports said the fire started in a trailer on a farm and quickly spread to a barn containing potentially hazardous materials. A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson confirmed the incident is ongoing and units have been called out across the county.

The spokesman confirmed there were no injuries or casualties, but crews remained at the scene to contain the fire.

The department said in a statement: “The initial response included two fire engines from Barnstaple, one fire engine from South Molton and an officer.

“Based on additional information gathered from the caller, fire control then escalated the incident and mobilized a Barnstaple water carrier and two officers.

“When the crews arrived at the scene of the incident, they confirmed that there was a large fully developed barn fire and requested two more fire engines (Braunton and Torrington) and an aerial platform ladder (Danes Castle – Exeter) for access and resources.”

The A377 is currently closed and is expected to remain closed until 5am.

Motorists have been urged to allow more time for their journey and to find alternative routes.

An environmental protection unit was also called to the scene.

The crew confirmed that the barn containing several caravans, machinery and cylinders was 100% damaged by fire, but everyone present at the scene is accounted for.

According to eyewitnesses, there was a huge explosion.

An eyewitness told Devon Live: “It’s a huge fire. We were traveling through Combe Martin County via Umberleigh to the A30.

“We saw three fire engines and a police van drive through Barnstaple at us. We had to walk past the fire and stop and see it from a field.
