The best road tests of all time: Bugatti EB110 GT Car News

TESTED 16.3.94

Some of the world’s most talented automotive designers and engineers produced the long-awaited EB110 GT. At its heart was a very flexible 60-valve quad-turbo 3.5-liter V12, delivering 553 hp via smooth six-speed manual and four-wheel drive. The EB110’s carbon fiber chassis was suspended by versatile double wishbones.

Capable of 30-70mph in 3.3 seconds, the EB110 was only beaten for overall pace by the 110kg lighter Jaguar XJ220. It delivered its performance with more poise than the Jag, however, and gave off a Ferrari-rivalling scream, while managing 21.6mpg on our tour route.

The XJ220 edged out the Bugatti for grip and steering feel, but the EB110 was much more nimble. The Bugatti cornered beautifully, with minimal body roll, but the ride was unrivaled among supercars. The brakes were also superb.

The cabin was functional rather than opulent. It was fine for average-sized drivers but could barely accommodate six-footers, and luggage space was limited to a 77-litre bin behind the seats.

What happened next ?

The EB110 suffered at the hands of the all-conquering McLaren F1 that soon followed. After the lighter 603bhp EB110 Super Sport, Bugatti folded, as its owner, Romano Artioli, had also gone the extra mile to buy Lotus. Some partially built EB110s were purchased, modified and resold by Dauer. Bugatti was acquired by Volkswagen in 1998 and the Veyron was launched in 2005.
