Honda S2000: At the heart of the Honda S2000 is a wonderful engine. It combines brilliantly with a six-speed gearbox, pleasant to use and very precise. Just put your foot down, feel the power build up, then be rocketed into the action quickly and at 150 mph. It’s almost as fast as the power roof, which only takes 10 seconds to do its job.
The sophisticated suspension system means the car has plenty of grip and tackles corners with ease, as it always feels perfectly balanced. The standard specification was good, including remote locking, an immobilizer, power windows, power mirrors and leather for the seats and steering wheel.
From 2002 a heated rear window was a real bonus, the upgraded Category 1 alarm meant there was less chance of it getting nicked and a CD player added to the sonic onslaught. What Honda has never messed with is the beautifully aggressive yet purposeful styling.
Negligence and improper modifications should put you off. A specialist maintenance history is reassuring. Surely one of the best roadsters of all time, the S2000 is a true classic. The prices are very high.
