Speed limit will be reduced on Key Somerset Road Bath City News

This week will see new speed limits put in place on Kingston Road in Taunton and in the village of Kingston Saint Mary.

The speed limit will be reduced from 60mph to 40mph and will start at Nailsbourne before entering the village of Kingston St Mary. There will also be an implementation of a new 20mph limit throughout the village.

The works will take place from April 19 to April 22, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., and traffic control in the form of stop and go signs will be in place throughout this period.

Both speed reductions were funded by Kingston St Mary’s Parish Council and it is hoped this will increase pedestrian and driver safety throughout the village, particularly in light of the recent accident which severely damaged The Old Bakery. Recent years have seen an increase in traffic since the introduction of the Taunton School campus in the old Vicarage and the welcome revitalization of The Swan in Kingston – the local pub.

Kingston Road is a main road linking Taunton to Bridgwater via the Quantock Hills and begins towards the village from the junction at Taunton’s St Andrews Church, where Station Road (A3038), Greenway Road and Priorswood Road meet.

The new speed limits will come into play ahead of the construction of a new secondary road which will link the A358 at Pen Elm to Taunton Road. It is part of an upcoming urban extension of Staplegrove, due to begin in early July this year.

It will bring a total of 1,600 new homes to the Staplegrove area and, along with the new secondary road, increased traffic along Kingston Road. These new speed limits put in place before the development will hopefully be effective in ensuring increased road safety in the village before the inevitable increase in traffic.
