US extradition of Assange sent to Priti Patel for approval | United Kingdom | News UK News

Magistrates yesterday issued an order clearing the way for him to face espionage charges. Home Secretary Priti Patel will now be in charge of deciding whether or not to approve his deportation after a long legal battle.

An extradition order was issued by Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

But that could be further delayed by a call from Assange. He has been held in Belmarsh prison in south-east London for three years since he was dragged from the Ecuadorian embassy in central London.

Assange, 50, who watched on video from prison, faces up to 175 years in prison in the United States for allegedly conspiring to obtain and disclose defense data. It follows the publication of documents relating to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
