Huddersfield Town 2 Barnsley 1: Tykes relegated as Terriers secure play-off place
Asbaghi took over in mid-November when the Reds already seemed doomed for relegation.
Asked how a team that made the play-offs last season had relegated this, he replied: “I think it’s a combination of a lot of things. Barnsley, as a football club, have historically been struggling between the League One and the Championship If you look at the big picture with Barnsley, it’s pretty normal.
“Last year was a pretty big exception. After that year with the expectation that you create and you lose a lot of experienced players, the backbone in the center line, the expectations go instead to other players that are much younger and not they have the same experience and when you start, you go into the Championship, you don’t win any football matches, the pressure on you is too much to handle.
“I wouldn’t say the reason Barnsley have been relegated is because of one or two things. It’s certainly due to a combination of a lot of things and it’s important to be good at identifying what those things are.”
Asbaghi’s contract has a buyout clause that can now be triggered, but he doesn’t want anyone to rush into rash decisions.
“It’s time to reflect for the whole club, for me and for everyone else,” he said. “Now we can accept the fact in a calm way.
“We still have two weeks left (of the season) and we are still fighting for our pride. The players still have to maintain their professionalism.”
“A lot of people would be happy to switch places to play our next game, even if there’s nothing in it.”
