Animal welfare campaigners will protest Morrisons’ decision to sell so-called ‘FrankenChickens’ this weekend. Charities Open Cages and The Humane League UK are calling on the supermarket giant to stop selling chicken breeds they say are suffering.
Demonstrations are expected to take place across the country, with demonstrations outside the Morrisons store on Priory Bridge Road, Taunton on Saturday April 30. collapses under its own weight.
The silent protest will take place in over 20 towns and cities across the UK. Those in attendance will support the #morrisonsmisery campaign, which highlights cruelty on farms that supply chicken to the supermarket.

However, Morrisons defended his position on animal welfare. A spokesperson said the store is in line with Tesco and Sainsburys – committing to a range of chicken that meets the 9 Better Chicken Commitment standards.
The events will take place between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. On the event’s Facebook page, the organizer of Open Cages says: “Meet the Frankenchicken: an animal designed to grow so abnormally large, abnormally fast that it collapses under its own weight. It’s the dark secret behind “welfare-assured” supermarket chicken.
“Animal welfare charities Open Cages and The Humane League UK are campaigning for Morrisons to stop selling these poor animals. Through years of work, over 250 companies have made the pledge across the UK and Europe, but Morrisons refuses.
“On April 30 there will be an official day of protest at Morrisons stores across the UK. We will be doing our part outside the Morrisons store in Taunton, showing customers the truth and telling them how they can help end this cruelty. We invite you to join us for a rewarding day of action for animals with like-minded advocates!”
A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We care deeply about animal welfare. All of our regular chickens are raised above Red Tractor standards; we are also the only retailer in Europe to ask our chicken suppliers costs of requiring the chicken to be born in the barn in which it will be raised by 2025.
“80% of our fresh chicken already meets this standard. We also actively monitor any malpractice in our supply chain; we will never tolerate it or look away and if we ever find it, we will act quickly and decisively.
