Sussex police officer guilty of assaulting girl in police custody Brighton News

A police officer has been found guilty of assaulting a child by kicking her while she was in police custody.

Ian Cheesman, 53, has pleaded not guilty to the assault of a 13-year-old girl, which occurred on April 6, 2021, at Chichester Detention Centre.

But Cheesman, from Goring, was convicted yesterday and given a community order of 12 months, 50 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £750 in costs.

Cheesman, who was then a sergeant in Sussex Police, was suspended from duty.

He is now the subject of an internal investigation following the outcome of the case at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court.

The incident was referred to the Independent Office of Police Conduct who ordered a local investigation by the Professional Standards Department.

Detective Superintendent Rachel Carr said: “Sussex Police expect the highest personal and professional standards from anyone who works for us.

“The Force’s Professional Standards Department will now review the misconduct proceedings following the outcome of the court case.”
