The main design phases are complete, but there is still a lot to do, of course. There is always more to do. But the main design effort is now focused on cars beyond the Eletre. Production is not expected for another year, but for the LTCC’s 120-person team, major design tasks have passed.

Why is Eletre so big? A smaller SUV would surely better evoke the Lotus spirit?
“This car has a vital job to do in China, where size really matters. Technology is also important, as it is in other global markets, and we decided we could do a better job of showing the high level we have reached with this in a large car. By the way, large SUVs are still doing very well in global markets.”
Who do you see as your competitors?
“We are aiming for very high-end competition: Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari models when they come. So far we are ahead of the game. We’ve worked hard to give the Eletre a mid-engined character, a sort of hypercar look, which is pretty good in a car that starts under £100,000. Our car is a unique proposition, and it will be for some time.
